American Military History Fighting for Respect: African-American Soldiers in WWI Harlem Hellfighters in action. Lewis was one of 380,000 black soldiers who had served in the United States army during the World War. Although not nearly as respected as any of the white soldiers involved in the war effort, African American combat troops, in many respects, were much better off than the laborers. As the world commemorates the Centenary of the Great War, the African side of this story remains a footnote, despite huge losses of human lives. Despite a push by African American leaders for integrated units, black troops remained segregated, and the vast majority of these new soldiers were used for support and labor, rather than combat.
